TOP NOTCH 3
Unit 2 – Health Matters

Topics covered in the unit:
1. What are the different kinds of medical treatment available in Japan? (alternative medicine e.g. homeopathy, acupuncture and conventional medicine). Which ones are popular in Japan and why? Which ones in your partner’s country?
2. What is the healthcare system in Japan like? Is it cheap or expensive to go to the doctor in Japan? Do people go to the doctor often? What kind of health insurance do most people have? Your partner’s country?
3. What kind of precautions people need to take when travelling abroad? When people come to Japan what should they be aware of? When people go to (country) what should they be aware of?
Students please prepare to talk to your Skype partner on the topics above. Remember that your partner may not know about Japanese culture, and you may need to explain some things. Also, try to ask a lot of questions and find out about your partner’s country. Asking personal questions about people’s health are sometimes rude, so be careful.
You could also ask about:
  • What kind of foods are considered to be healthy in (country)?
  • Sport is one way to keep healthy – what kind of sports are popular in (country)?
  • Do people play sports regularly?
Remember to take some notes for your report.
